Peabo Bryson collaborated several times with Filipino theater star and singer Lea Salonga, singing together the songs ‘I Have Dreamed’ and ‘How Wonderful We Are’

MANILA, Philippines – Grammy-winning artist Peabo Bryson died on Tuesday, June 2 (Wednesday, June 3, Manila time), his family announced. He was 75.

“While our hearts are broken, we find comfort in knowing how deeply Peabo was loved and how many lives were touched by his voice and his generous spirit,” his family said in a statement, according to The Guardian.

Bryson’s death comes just days after he suffered a stroke. In a statement his rep sent to American outlet Variety on June 1, his family shared that he had been receiving medical care.

The American singer-songwriter rose to fame in the ’70s when he released his self-titled debut album.

Aside from Peabo, among his most successful records is the 1983 collaborative album Born To Love with Roberta Flack, fronted by the hit song “Tonight I Celebrate My Love.” Meanwhile, his 1984 album Straight From The Heart includes what would become his most recognizable hit yet: “If Ever You’re in My Arms Again.”

The aspect of his impact as an artist that cuts across generations, however, is his work as a soulful balladeer for the legendary Disney movies Aladdin and Beauty and the Beast, for which he sang “A Whole New World” with Regina Belle, and “Beauty and the Beast” with Celine Dion, respectively.

Bryson had even joined forces with Filipino theater star and singer Lea Salonga for several songs. He first got behind the mic with her for “I Have Dreamed” from the 1992 album The King and I. Just three years later, they shared the studio again for “How Wonderful We Are” from the 1995 album People: A Musical Celebration of Diversity.

Bryson is survived by his wife, former R&B singer Tanya Boniface Bryson, their son, Robert, and another daughter Linda, from a previous relationship. – Rappler.com
