Have you been noticing the names Sharmaine and Vanessa mentioned in every social media platform?

While the trend has been drawing laughs from netizens, some people still don’t understand the reference. If you haven’t been chronically online lately, here’s why Sharmaine and Vanessa are trending.

Sharmaine the orange

First of all, no, they are not actual people.

On TikTok, user Baet shared a video of himself pretending to be a talking orange.

In the video, the orange complains that its name was not properly thought out compared to other fruits.

“Naiinis naman ako ‘te kasi parang ‘di naman ako pinag-isipan,” the fictional orange said. “O ‘di ba ikaw ang pangalan mo ay mango, pero dilaw ka naman. Parang obvious naman kasi sa ‘kin te, orange, wala na bang ibang pangalan? Kaloka naman.”

When asked what name it would rather be called, the orange replied, “Sharmaine.”

“Ay, ang ganda. Ipa-notaryo natin ‘yan,” the persona in the background said.

Vanessa the fly

Meanwhile, Vanessa is a fly who shares the same naming dilemma as orange, a.k.a. Sharmaine.

“Gusto ko lang din sana ng sariling pangalan,” the fictional fly said. “Ang totoong pangalan ko talaga ay Fly, ‘di ba? Napaka obvious naman.”

“Ang gusto ko talaga sanang pangalan ay Vanessa,” the persona added.

Internet’s favorite new reference

Following the viral videos, amused netizens were quick to hop on.

On TikTok, a user named Isha posted a video introducing her husband and son to “Sharmaine” while proudly holding up an orange.

Meanwhile, another TikTok user, John Rey, joined the fun by pretending to buy Sharmaine-flavored juice from a sari-sari store.

Even brands got in on the joke. On Facebook, SM City Legazpi shared a photo of the fruits section in its supermarket, where oranges were humorously labeled “Sharmaine.”

In response, Baet reacted to a photo of “Sharmaine” oranges and joked, “Hindi pa napapanotaryo, bakit niyo binebenta agad?”
