For the first time ever, a traditional Santacruzan was held in Zagreb, Croatia.

It featured a sagala of Filipino women, who flocked from different parts of Europe, dressed as characters from the old and new testaments of the Bible.

According to “Unang Balita” Monday, the santacruzan was preceded with a mass at San Vincent de Paul church. During his homily, Father Andrew Bayal, who officiated the mass, said the santacruzan is proof that Filipino faith and culture remains alive and well in any part of the world.

Santacruzan is a grand procession held during the Flores de Mayo festivities every May in honor of the Virgin Mary.

The procession concludes the month-long celebration and depicts the discovery of the Holy Cross by Helena of Constantinople and her son, Constantine the Great.

In an interview with Radio Veritas in May, Manila Cardinal Jose Advincula said it is a commemoration “not only the search of St. Helena for the Holy Cross, but also the deeper meaning of the Cross in our lives as Christians.”

“The Santacruzan is not merely a colorful tradition, and certainly not a beauty pageant, but an invitation and reminder for us to take pride in and live out our faith,” he said. — LA, GMA News
