Fisherfolk in Cavite who were affected by the high cost of fuel received assistance from the GMA Kapuso Foundation in celebration of National Fisherfolk Day on May 31.

According to a “24 Oras” report on Monday, more than 4,000 individuals from the fisherfolk community received food packs through the foundation’s Operation Bayanihan project.

Among the beneficiaries was fisherman Jessy Flores, who continues to use a worn-out fishing net because replacing it would cost him about P2,000.

“Durog-durog na po ‘yung lambat naming. Tiyaga-tiyaga na lang po kami talaga, binababad na lang namin po magdamag para kumita lang,” he said.

Eliseo Tolentino, who works as a boatman, used to earn as much as P800 on a good day, although his daily income now has dropped to as little as P50.

“Inaabutan ako ng 40 pesos, 50, pero ‘pag maramihan naman na hindi naman pwede ibenta sa palengke, binibigay nila sa akin mga isda,” he said.

Another fisherman, Reynaldo Anit, is preparing to sell his boat after being unable to go out to sea for a while. He now plans to earn a living by selling refreshments.

Per the report, the GMA Kapuso Foundation distributed food packs to more than 4,000 fisherfolk in Cavite as part of its outreach efforts.

“Dahil po sa tulong na ‘yan, kahit papaano po ay maibsan po ‘yung gutom po nila ngayong araw na ‘to. Kami po’y taos-pusong nagpapasalamat sa Kapuso Foundation,” said Acey Quijano, an official of Barangay 14 in Cavite.
